The Rundown

While transitioning into adulthood is an adventure in itself, Princess Martina’s coming of age is fraught with challenges beyond the generic variety — danger, deception, and the imminent devastation of her homeland, the kingdom of Brightalia. Although Martina’s “dazzling eyes glittered with the sun, a violet color never seen before” give her special powers that could help save Brightalia from destruction, she is initially careful to keep her abilities hidden because deep fear of sorcery has resulted in practicing magic being outlawed.

She’s forced to embrace her gifts after tragedy catapults her brother Drago into power. Suddenly transformed into someone Martina no longer recognizes, Drago is a conniving leader with dark secrets and wicked intentions that accelerate Brightalia’s trajectory toward its demise.

Martina’s quest is as much about her inner struggles with self-acceptance and her ability to trust — both others and her intuition — as it is about external battles and challenges. With the help of Enzo, a villager she befriends and trusts with her secret, Martina is determined to save her home and her wayward brother before it’s too late.

The Recommendation

With a female protagonist coming to terms with claiming and wielding her power, this fantasy adventure is rooted in timeless, universal themes. There are moments Magical Eyes: Dawn of the Sand resembles other coming of age tales infused with magic and mayhem so closely that it lacks freshness (and antagonist Drago will forever be Draco Malfoy in my imagination) . However, the story blossoms each of the many times descriptive writing juxtaposes Princess Martina’s inner and outer worlds, deftly showing how each one tests the princess’ courage and belief in herself.

This book is ideal for multi-generational sharing, a great choice for reading together at bedtime (aloud, with character voices!) or over a rainy weekend. Be sure not to miss the colorful illustrations at the end of the book (also featured on the author’s website).
