The Rundown

Sammie Koo is a single, disorganized art teacher who is regularly stopped for traffic violations, but usually flirts her way out of tickets. One day she gets pulled over and begins the same routine of acting overly sweet and batting her eyelashes in order to charm her way out of a ticket. Unfortunately, her charms don’t seem to work on this particular young male officer this time and she sits there wondering why.

As she reads the officer’s name tag she immediately understands the unusual situation she has found herself in. Lucas Choi was her lab partner in their high school science class. He was a no nonsense, stick-to-the-rules type back then. He held her accountable for every minor infraction, and rubbed her nose in her mistakes. Now, he’s a police officer, and he’s even more of a rule follower. He will never let her off the hook for this infraction or any of her many past shortcomings either. The only reason Sammie gets off without a ticket is because Lucas is called away to handle another matter.

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to either one of them, Lucas’s young daughter, Lucy, is taking art classes from Sammie at her art studio. Neither Lucas or Sammie realize this because Lucy’s grandmother, Mrs. Benson, is the person who brings Lucy to the art class.  Sammie has helped Lucy snap out of her quiet shell and they have formed a strong bond. Though, both Lucy and Mrs. Benson love Sammie’s warm and carefree ways, Lucas doesn’t feel the same way toward Sammie. He continues to want to label her as irresponsible and immature.

Sammie finds out that Lucas married a girl from high school who was predictable and reliable. But they are no longer together, so Lucas must depend upon his grandmother to help raise his young daughter.

As Lucas and Sammie reignite their friendship and they get to know each other again, will they be able to see past their differences or will opposites be able to attract?

The story is well-written with fleshed-out and believable characters of all ages and the author has created a flawed, yet adorable, main character who meets her match in her love interest. Even though this is a modern-day story, there was a bit of a Mr. Darcy versus Elizabeth Bennet feel, which makes this rocky romance a great read.

The Recommendation

If you’re a fan of star-crossed lovers, clean stories, or modern-day romances, this novella will appeal to you. The author takes the reader on a journey detailing what it means to let go of your past in order to forgive yourself and others, as Sammie, the main character, has to do just that. Her romantic interest isn’t left out of the loop as far as needing to grow up a bit and give Sammie a second chance. There were moments, because of Lucas’s stubbornness, that he seemed not quite right for her, and like she should go ahead and move on. But in the end, DRAWN TO YOU delivers a quick, sweet read for those looking for a fun, short, romantic story.
